From Quantnet Wiki

Your choice of programming languages can distinguish you as a quant or pigeonhole you in IT. There is a lot of discussion on the best language to learn as a quant; see the C page in particular, and explore the Computing category on the Quantnet forums. Dominic Connor, a head-hunter and prominent quantnet forum poster, gives the following hierarchy of programming languages:

  1. C++
  2. VBA (not VB.NET)
  3. Matlab
  4. C#
  5. Perl
  6. SQL
  7. Mathematica
  8. Java
  9. Fortran
  10. Smalltalk
  11. Slang
  12. Objective C
  13. VB.NET

It is widely accepted and oft repeated on the quantnet forums that C++ is the most important programming language to learn as a quant. Many other languages, claims poster Wallstyouth, should be left to learn on the job.
