Welcome to Quantnet, Kucha
1> I sit true that my chances of getting admitted are not afftected by the number of ppl already admitted or my background as na international student.
2> Is it true that the coll accepts only students who will have chances of securing a job post MFE...
Yes and yes. From the dept's website FAQ http://math.baruch.cuny.edu/masters_faq06.html
# Q: How many students do you admit in your program?
# A: We do not have a quota for admission, and we do not have a quota for enrolled students. We admit as many students as we believe have a good chance of being successful in the program, meaning that they will graduate from the program and find a job in the financial industry. The enrollment numbers might vary from year to year; see the Admission Stats page for more details.
3> In the chat transcript i read about one student from india enquiring about the GPA to be filled in the application form...here we use a %age system..i have an aggregate of 85%...so should i put my GPA as 3.4 .....is there any other formula for calculating it.
That seems reasonable. Asia uses 100 points system while US uses 4 GPA system. Some of our students are from India so probably they will comment on it.
I hope that these are answered soon..the application fees is $135 which is quite costly..if you would be interested in reviewing my profile i will be very happy to post it here and learn about my chances of getting admitted.
Yes, post your profile here and some of us will give you some input.

Hi,
I am AK from india. I am planning to apply for fall 2007 to baruch. Actually it is the only coll i am applying to for a number of reasons..
Yes, I read your posts on Global-Derivatives ;)
It's quite a gamble you take when you only apply to Baruch's MFE program, young man. You are going ALL IN huh. Given the stakes at risk here, I would suggest you take time and make sure the application is your best effort.
For your information, I only applied to Baruch and got in. After all, Baruch is exactly what I ever wanted so there is no point for me to just send a bunch of applications to other also-run programs. I know I want to go to Baruch and I'll do whatever it takes to get in.

Yes, I'm aware of the $135 application fee, which is quite higher compared to other programs. Trust me, it's the least of your worries and the best $135 you ever pay. The fee may serve as a filter from those not too serious about applying to Baruch.
Our Director, Prof. Stefanica will have a chance to read this post but for obvious reasons, he won't comment on it. The decision will be made when your application is complete and ready to be reviewed. Other students may comment on your backgrounds and what you can do to improve it.
As a part of electrical engineering we have used matlab in more than 3 labs...C++ to compute power systems parameters using Newton-Raphson and Gauss-Siedel Algorithms in power systems lab.....and assembly language programming in microprocessors lab..
That's useful stuff. Keep the code. You will do some of those things again in Numerical Linear Algebra couse taught by Prof. Stefanica. It is one of the best classes I have. C++ is a serious business we run here. Matlab is very useful to know but plays limited role in our training.

You may wish to add in your personal statement that the Baruch Program is the ONLY program you are interested in and WHY, and give a list of pointers as to what you would do if you don't get it.
Otherwise, I'd say your profile is pretty cool!
Good luck!

hmmm...wouldnt this backfire...actually i havent thought about it till now...i was confident of making it....but now i have to think of something else i suppose :(
You know, I would apply to only one program if and only if I know my chance of getting in is 100%. With your profile, I'm sure there are many programs that are more than happy to take your money. If you frequent GD board, you will know those programs. You will also see that it's rare that students apply to only 1 program. I have seen people with 10 or more programs on their list.
In the past, people may get in with lesser profile but I need to stress that it's no longer the case with our program this year and the foreseeable future. Let's be blunt, if I reapply to Baruch's MFE in 2007, 2008,...there is no guarantee I can get in given the stronger pool of applicants we have each year.
No longer I can treat my Baruch application with lesser attention. I would have to give it the same level of details and effort as if it was for Columbia, UCB, and other top programs.
My advice to you is NOT to bet the farm on one application. Hedge your chance accordingly. There are still time for you to apply to a couple more programs.
Please take the advices from our students with a grain of salt. You can't find any other program that you have direct and constant access to current students like our program. We are all here to help prospective students navigating the process. We only can give you advice and suggestions that we think serve us well when we applied. We can't give you assurance or predict your chance. The ultimate decision lays in the hand of our program's admission committee. One thing I'm pretty sure is they are very fair and treat every applicant with the same measure of expectation and standard.
Lastly, good luck with your application. I sincerely hope your application stands a good chance.
Andy

let me take this oppurtunity o thank al of you here..especially Andy....
not heeding to your advice I will be applying only to Baruch....in case i feel that my chances arent that good I may end up not applying....
i have had a great time talking to you people...i wish you all the best of luck
Applying to only one program is not wise, nor recommended, regardless how strong your background is. And, saying that Baruch is your top choice is advisable only if true. We would figure out whether it was true or not pretty quickly.

now ur thinking im lying....:D....go ahead...
being insulted is worse than having a reject :-|
Mr Kuchcha I think you should be more careful before replying in the public forum. The last post was from Prof Dan Stefanica (director of Baruch MS in Finance program). Yes the same program you are planning to apply ...
Abt how many schools you want to apply it all now depends on your personal choice. Andy already discussed everything in detail. Best of Luck

i completely agree with your point of you but i have reasons for doing the same which can be spelt out explicitly in a public forum.
pm me.

I am rather sure this is a joke, no reason to make more of it.
