Dear Students, Faculty, and Alumni of Baruch's Applied Mathematics in Finance Program:

We witness the changing of the seasons as Autumn adorns the world with her red, yellow, and orange robes. And so, President Jimmy Chin, Vice President Vladimir Voronov, Treasurer John Lai, Secretary Georgia Koutsovasilis, Director Yiping Zhang of QuantNetwork with Professor Dan Stefanica cordially invite members of the Applied Mathematics program to an Autumn Gathering. It will be a time of high festivities with new students meeting upper classmen, alumni interacting with the student body, and professors seeing their students in a different light.

The Autumn Gathering will take place in the stately estate of the Koutsovasilis House on Saturday, October 7, 2006 starting at 1 o'clock in the afternoon.

The Hostess, Secretary Koutsovasilis, will graciously provide all dishes,
wine, and desserts for the Gathering. However, if your heart is so
intent in blessing everyone with your generosity and culinary skills, then feel free to bring your dish, dessert, or beverage; ensure you notify the Hostess ahead of time.

The estate of the Koutsovasilis House is located in the Borough of Staten Island. The House may be accessed via express bus service from Manhattan.
If you need a ride, please post in the appropriate Quantnet forum. If you may offer rides, please contact Director Yiping Zhang directly along with the additional number of people who can fit. Please note that not everyone can be accommodated.

Can you sing, dance, do magic tricks, play an instrument, etc? Has a certain movie or novel touched your heart immensely? Or have you done something special (paintings, collections, calligraphy, architectural drawings, etc. in the past? Please showcase your talent, hobby, or work at the Autumn Gathering. A karaoke machine is available.

Please RSVP on Quantnet by October 5, 2006.

Andy, I believe you are trying to volunteer to do something really entertaining at the gathering... I wonder what that could be?

I can stand still for people to throw (empty) beer cans at me. Or I can :smt034 "She bangs" in William Hung's style. Which one is more entertaining to you ?

Talking about singing talents, I believe a couple of us can do Britney Spears' songs and "YMCA" quite well. \:D/

Mike, don't be so humble. After Prof. Stefanica's folk dance, you and Max can keep up the rhythm with a folk dance of Russia. This is what I have in mind

If dancing is not your thing, then how about singing "We will rock you" or "Wind of Change" like you two did last time at Ibop :smt044 :smt034 :smt035 :smt030

I'm thinking of meeting at Baruch before going together to SI. Any one got any plan in term of transportation ?

As for food, I may bring some world-famous Vietnamese summer rolls or spring rolls.

Here are some spring rolls

Express Buses:
You may take either the x10 or x11 Express Bus from Manhattan either in Midtown or in the Downtown area. The fare each way is $5. The estimated time of travel is 40 min.

Request the bus driver to drop you off at Manor Road. The x10 and x11 bus stop in Staten Island is approximately 8 blocks away from the House. You may either walk (up Manor Rd. until you see a Citgo gas station, left on Ocean Terris, right on Peru Street, left on Foster Avenue) or call the House to get an available driver to pick you up.

Maps and schedules are available at

Professor,

You could talk about your love affair with the Bronx Bombers, your hobby of collecting rare butterfly species, as well as Romanian folk dancing.

The danger in doing something well, Gia, is it creates high expectations. That said, I am looking forward to the next social at the Koutsovasilis residence. :smt005

Thank you Gia! I had a great time! You are lucky to be blessed with such a warm and generous family. The food was great as was meeting other's in the program who are further along. The show and tell was quite interesting. I didn't know that 'Rushali' meant 'doorman' and now I do. Russian Mike brought some great Georgian beer; I hope he made it home. Yiping's husband Harry is way kool and our political discussion was quite enlightening. To all those who missed the gathering, well...

Russian Mike brought some great Georgian beer; I hope he made it home.

point a) I did make it home in time to see Nikolai Valuev win his boxing match :)

point b) The beer was actually Lithuanian as correctly noticed by Max (I thought it was Ukrainian)

point c) Georgians are known for their wine
