Hi Andy, count me in. I do not have my laptop yet though so can we do it in a room with a computer?

I'm trying to see if I can secure a room with a projector. Not sure if I can secure the lab (we can't install anything on the lab computer anyway). We will use this forum for testing during the workshop.
Hopefully, after the workshop, everyone will use the forum more efficient and utilize all the features on this forum as well as being able to latex anything.

I will upload the latex template that I use to take note during the class as well as the one we use for the group homework. Probably, we will run this workshop one more time if there are enough request.

A matlab workshop will be planned sometime next month (using matlab to do the numerical linear algebra problem, LU , Cholesky, pricing bonds, BS, etc)

Andy,

Sorry to interrupt again. We have Reuters I from 1 - 2:30 PM and then Reuters II from 2:45 - 4 PM.

AFAIK four of us (probably more) are attending Reuters sessions. If you can reschedule that would be great.

I promise you ther are no more engagements that day. I guess by the time we finish all the work shops we'll be :smt015

I guess i'll can either move it earlier or later so accommodate more people. I don't mind.

I'll make a poll here, please vote then I can make up the time.
First choice, before the Reuters workshop such as 12-1pm
Second choice, after the Reuters such as 4:30-5:30pm.

Before coming to the workshop tomorrow, please install miktex 2.5 and an editor of choice (either TexnicCenter or Winedit). I'm using TexnicCenter, it's free and works wonderfully.

Make sure you download and install Mixtek BEFORE installing the editor

Download mixtek 2.5 here http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/miktex/setup-2.5.2441.exe?download
Get the setup.exe, run it first time and select Download -> complete
After it's done, run setup.exe the second time, now select Install ->Complete

After completion, go to Programs -> Miktex 2.5 -> Update and make sure you install all the latest files.

Download TexnicCenter here http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/texniccenter/TXCSetup_1Beta7_01.exe?download

Yes, it's 11:30am-12:45pm....I've been changing the time so many times.

If you don't have a laptop yet, you can take notes to install them later. You can use a computer in the lab to practise the latex syntax and post on QN forum to test.

If there is enough interest, I can run another Latex introduction for the new students and anyone interested.

Hint: If I ever become a TA, i will request all my students to submit homework electronically and the best way to do it is to use latex ;)

Almost no one from 2005 cohort used Latex.
Almost everyone from 2006 cohort learned and used Latex pretty well.

I will be interested in Latex workshop.
Thanks,

Count me in, too. I'd be extremely interested in learning LaTex. What are the odds of kicking it off before the Adv Calc refresher?

I'll be happy to pop in on a Sat morning and get you guys up and running on the Latex thing. Try to get, say at least 10 people to respond here, and I'll arrange the time and location. We'll probably do it after the C++ refresher is over.

From my experience, learning Latex and being comfortable with it have many advantages. Not knowing it prevents people from participating on the HW discussion threads. There is no frustration like not being able to ask the questions because you don't know how to post the mathematical equations. Most useful will be in Probability course and Math courses.

Secondly, when it's time to submit your hw, you have a 2 choices. One is typing some latex formula in your laptop, convert it to pdf file and email directly. The other is to find a scanner, scan them and save as pictures, and try to email those huge pictures to the TA.

There are other alternative like using Word Equation editor or take digital picture of the paper HW, etc but I found them not very efficient.

If you are self-sufficient, you can get the guide here http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/info/lshort/english/lshort.pdf and start latexing away. It takes very little time to learn it.
