View Full Version : Looking for gym partner
looking for several gym partners who can and be willing to participate in various gym activities, including but not limited to weight lifting, swimming, table tennis, treadmill, racquetballing, basketball.
The ideal partner would be in his/her 20s, study fulltime, outgoing, willing to take risk or suffer bodily injury, have good workout ethnic.
Schedule: ideally workout several times a week in Vertical Campus' basement gym.
Goal: a sharp mind in a fit body to prepare for the punishing schedule of the program. As a bonus, wouldn't mind looking like this after several months

Frank,
You are not qualified for this partner thingy -- you are not full-time!!!! (Andy said that he prefers full-time.)
Andy,
I was about to have my lunch and I saw your future picture -- it made me want to throw up. No, no... it would be toooooooooooooooo much.:smt018

The gym and every part of campus service are available free of charge for registered students. That includes but not limited to library printing, health screening (free HIV test, free contraceptive, etc), gym service, etc.
I regret very much the fact that I have not utilized the gym at my previous colleges. It costs so much to join any sport club while we get it for free at Baruch with our ID. I look forward to taking advantange of the gym at our Vertical Building.
I plan to work out around 3-4pm, for 1 or 2 hours, take a shower and change before the class at 6pm. The guys and I will be at Baruch during weekends for group study and workout so if you can join, let me know.

Group study? When is that going to start?
Frank,
You are not qualified for this partner thingy -- you are not full-time!!!! (Andy said that he prefers full-time.)
Everyone is more than welcome to join. I prefer full-timers for the sole reason that it's impossible for part-timers (people who work fulltime) to do anything besides running to class and home. If someone can fix the schedule to fit in, do let me know.
Andy,
I was about to have my lunch and I saw your future picture -- it made me want to throw up. No, no... it would be toooooooooooooooo much.:smt018Bridgett,
Very sorry to ruin your lunch. (Note: do not read Quantnet before lunch :))
Don't worry, i won't get to that level without doping. Maybe this is more like it

Group study? When is that going to start?
Right after the refresher class ends. Do let me know if you want to join. We will study during weekdays and weekends to accommodate part-timers.

I'm in to the gym thing Mon-Thu. It's a good idea. We can study in the morning, then go to the gym before classes. I also interested in pool once a week, and playing basketball. So, ideally it will be two days of work out, one day of pool, and one day of Baketball a week. And, of course, going to the sauna before the class :D

Does school offer locker service for long term ?

Right on mate :D Dont forget some ping-pong and treadmill sessions in between. Let's group and lift weight Eddie. Let's see who get Bridgett to say "ewwwwwwwwwwwww" after a couple of months.
Does school offer locker service for long term ?Haven't checked out the Baruch's facility but the general rule at other CUNY's gyms is that you can't store your stuff in the locker overnight. You will have to rent long term lockers if you like.

Does school offer locker service for long term ?
On a daily basis it's free.
If you want to have your own locker it's $25 per semester.
Some more info
Per Dmitriy's inquiry, here is the open hours of the gym during the summer. http://athletics.baruch.cuny.edu/Sports/gen/2006/Facilities_and_Schedules.asp. The hours for the Fall is
M-T :7am-10pm
F: 7am-9pm
Sat-Sun: 10am-6pm
Per Max's comment, the locker rental fee for the whole year is $75 and the first day to sign up is Sept 5th, you have to act quick to reserve a locker. The cost per semester is $25. It's very convinient to keep your books, workout clothes, jackets in the locker. Membership/Locker Rentals: (646) 312-5061
Per Frank's inquiry, here is the fee schedule. As you can see, only students can use the gym for free. Others have to pay up to $600/year to get a membership so USE it. http://athletics.baruch.cuny.edu/Sports/gen/2006/Membership%20and%20Rentals.asp

I have a question for everyone who has seen/been to the Baruch gym: how are the facilities compared with other gyms such as NYSC and any classes available?
Thanks!! :toimonster:
I have not been to the gym at Baruch but I have looked at their website and also used the gym at Lehman. NYSC, Bally's are not comparable to the gyms we have at CUNY because they do not have indoor pool and the space we have.
In the CUNY system, Lehman's gym the biggest and considered the best because they spent $45 million dollars to build this huge Apex complex (Two basketball courts, an Olympic pool, a running track, a subterranean street of glass-enclosed racquetball courts and dance studios). The bastketball courts there are often used as a computer fair. :D Read more here (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=990CE0D81F31F932A35756C0A962958260)
Baruch's gym is newer (built in 2001) but because of its location, everything is confined in the basement of Vertical Campus building so they can only do so much with so little space.
Bridgett, here are some classes that just finished. I'm sure they will open more during the Fall
Instructional Classes Schedule
Pilates - Tuesdays, 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Step Aerobics - Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:15 p.m. - 7:15 p.m.
Abs Classes - Mondays & Wednesdays, 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.; Fridays, 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

The facilities are clean and neat. Of course you will get more at NYSC, but Baruch's facilities are free. As for classes, there are very few offered, unfortunately.

Thanks for answering the questions, Andy and Dan.
After failing badly to do anything in the gym last semester, I'm reattempting to give it a second try. Hopefully, this time I will find some other partners outside of the MFE program ;)
I know Vladimir, Christian are there often. Anyone else ?

The gym at Baruch rules  So starting a supporting program "Spot a mathematician" is not a bad idea :smt100 Gym twice a week will somehow balance out a week of sitting in front of computer:smt024 There is a swimming pool, but in the evenings it sometimes gets overcrowded. Also Baruch has racquetball courts and a cool tennis instructor (Giuglescu is from Romania, and he used to be in top-5 in Europe during 90s).
The schedule of facilities is here: http://athletics.baruch.cuny.edu/Sports/gen/2006/Facilities_and_Schedules.asp
Get fit like Superman and Freddy Mercury... oops, I mean Ivan Poddubniy :)

For body-mind-spirit balancing there are two yoga and dynamic meditation centers that I know, just one block from Baruch:
115 E. 23 st, 12th floor (that's between Park and Lexington) - is for Dynamic meditations - their schedule is here: http://meditationmodule.com/schedule.htm
another center is for yoga and meditations, 297 3rd av @ 23rd street., their schedule is here: http://www.dharmayogacenter.com/schedule.htm.
And if you are into basketball, don't miss the event:
The final home basketball doubleheader of the 2006-07 season will take place on Wednesday, February 7, against Lehman College in the ARC Arena. The "Battle of the Boroughs" will start at 5:30 pm with the women's game, followed by the men's game at 7:30 pm.
I will try to do it Mon-Thr.
Mon, Wed. Thr, will be there around 4:30.
Tue., after 7:30.

As far as I have known, there are many Chinese students in Vertical's gym. And I was told that it is an excellent place.

the gym is decent, but the locker room is filthy.

while yes, the gym could be better, and there are arguably some "untidiness" issues with mens locker rooms, but come on - since when guys care about that stuff? as long as i have a good pool, a well-equipped workout room and a shower - i'll get by.
this is not Equinox College, CUNY, afterall (i think their yearly membership is more that the whole Baruch MFE tuition) ;D
that said, i am so down for a good session of ping pong - been craving for that for quite some time. anybody? (btw, highly recommend this bit - YouTube - MAtrix Ping Pong (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dcmDscwEcI))
that, and of course group studying - any newbies interested?
Jason

i will still go to the gym, but the locker room is still very filthy
Well said, Dmytro. NYSC is just across the street and they don't even have a pool ;)
For the price we pay for Baruch gym (FREE for students), it can't be beat.
Where is the ping pong room I've been hearing about. Is it behind some locked doors under some bunkers somewhere ? do we have to bring our own racquet and balls ? No pun intended here, people.
Dmytro, do find out and let us know. I'm so DOWN with it.
As for the youtube bit
1) You need to go to the gym first to play like that ;)
2) you can use the tag here to display the video \\:D/

i will still go to the gym, but the locker room is still very filthy
I'm sure you can get them to "clean up" their act if it's that bad. I never actually used the gym so I don't know how it is. I'm used to worse conditions in my country so I can live with anything. :D
Jason, why don't you call these numbers and ask them to do something
FITNESS CENTER DESK: (646) 312-5054
lOCKERS & MEMBERSHIPS: (646) 312-5061
POOL: (646) 312-5062
You can also write to Theticker.org and that may get their attention.
It doesn't hurt to try, right :)

There is a huge gym called Fighthouse: http://www.fighthouse.com/ on 27th st and 6th ave that I have been going to for the past year for kungfu (eagleclaw). If you are into martial arts, fighting, and swords, then you have a variety to choose from and will definitely get a work out and learn cool moves simultaneously. This is an alternative to those who have locker room issues.

Bikram Yoga, 5th Ave at 23rd St. (182 5th Ave)
90 minutes in the heat (great fun this time of year)
$20 for a 7 day intro special, from there the best option is $135/month.
I have been at this studio for years and find it friendly, clean and not too stinky.

Or Yoga to the People, at St Mark's. I know they hold classes fairly regularly, and only ask for a suggested donation of $10.
