The places every freshman should know about

As freshmen enter a new environment the whole atmosphere can be cold and disheartening. It is overwhelming and fills most students with understandable anxiety and fear. As freshmen you will see that most students fall in one of the extremes: having an overactive social life filled with drinking, and endless parties or a life that is filled with constant studying and frown lines. But there can be a balance between the two and as a newly incorporated student; you do not have to sacrifice one for the other.
One the main ways to master campus life is to know and understand the various offices around campus as they promote a healthy and active social, political, educational lifestyle for all their students. As a student these offices are beneficial to smoother and somewhat anxiety free college stay.
1) Student Life (VC 2-210)
This office could not have been named better Student Life. Here you can get discounts on everything from Broadway tickets to movies tickets, information on how to join clubs and campus events each week. This office helps maintain the student organizations and their programs so that every week something new and exciting is happening that you can attend and relax.
2) Career Development Center (VC 2-2150)
This is one of the most crucial places that a student must visit frequently during their campus life. The CDC is filled with friendly, helpful individuals who would make your journey as a student to working adult as effortless as possible.
In this office you will learn how to write a resume, cover letter and thank you notes to your future employers. Also they have thousands of part-time job, full time postings and internships available for students.
CDC events include job fairs, Executives-on-Campus, and several workshops. For more information, www.baruch.cuny.edu/careers.
3) Student Academic Counseling Center (VC 2-116)
This office is also a must for all students as it provides the much needed academic assistance that ensures an excellent grade. Whether or not you are having trouble in any subject area SACC is there to guide you. These tutors are undergrad students that have excelled in the course that they are tutoring and thus can help with the understanding of difficult subjects. Too many students wait until too late to utilize this office and then realize their mistake. The early you start going to tutoring the better!
4) Counseling Center (137 East 25th St)
The Counseling Center helps students with their emotional, social and personal needs. College life as you will soon find out is very stressful and having someone to talk to is always beneficial. The Counseling Center provides a staff of professional counselors who are there to listen confidentially to any problems that you may have.
5) Advisement and Orientation (VC 5-125)
You will find that throughout your college life you need to know the appropriate classes you need to graduate. This office provides this guidance, so that you do not take unnecessary courses. You can appeal grades, and request pass/ fail grade for a course. When registering for courses becomes your responsibility, this office will offer help to students who will feel confused about what courses to take.
