I will try to connect from a different terminal. Hopefully, this will be resolved shortly.

No matter what I tried, I got the same error message:

[09:50] Connecting...
[09:50] Unable to connect : java.net.ConnectException : Connection refused: connect

The chat might have to be postponed, if we cannot fix this by 10:30am.

I know other people were able to connect: Poirot, sanket, bobbychopra, etc...

Sorry guys...

Can you guys try this
Go to www.vBulletin-Fans.com (http://www.vbulletin-chat.com/chat.php)

It will popup a security warning, click OK. That should log you in.
When you are connected, click on Channels on the top and browse to #quantnet
That's our channel.

Unfortunately, nothing worked for me. We will have to reschedule the chat for another day.

I am very sorry about this, my schedule will be very tight in the near future.

You may want to post the most important questions here so he may get back later.

[08:11] <sanket> i just saw his post on the forum
[08:11] <Carl> Stefanica posted on quannet and said "I will try to connect from a different terminal. Hopefully, this will be resolved shortly."

[08:15] <Poirot> yep, an hour.
[08:15] <Quantnet18> How soon is the chat expected to begin
[08:15] <Poirot> Carl, would you be going to school on a full time basis?
[08:15] <sanket> We're waiting on Dan
[08:15] <sanket> he's running a bit late
[08:16] <Carl> I hope to
[08:16] <Carl> but i have questions about that
[08:16] <sanket> he posted this earlier
[08:16] <Poirot> i see
[08:16] <sanket> "I will try to connect from a different terminal. Hopefully, this will be resolved shortly."
[08:16] <Jocelyn> Did you browse the transcripts on the website?
[08:16] Nick change: Quantnet94 -> weiser
[08:17] <Carlos> Jocelyn: yes
[08:17] <Carlos> but I still have a couple of questions
[08:18] <Carl> does anyone know if there is a minimum number of classes to take if you go part time?
[08:18] <Carl> can you take 1? or must it be 2?
[08:19] <sanket> I don't know
[08:19] <Jocelyn> maybe we can share questions first
[08:19] <bobbychopra> as far as I know, you could even take 1 class parttime
[08:19] <bobbychopra> you could even skip a semester
[08:19] <Poirot> Dont think there is a minimum but lets get the official word from Dan.
[08:19] <Carl> ok, good to know. I will ask Dan when he gets here
[08:19] <bobbychopra> but you should get confirmation from Prof. Dan about it
[08:20] <Poirot> BTW, has anyone yet to take the GREs?
[08:20] <Carl> I took them in December
[08:20] <sanket> I took GRE in december
[08:21] <Poirot> Nice, I am taking mine in a month.
[08:21] NataliyaSaldina (NataliyaSa@vBFans-FA0AAE07.nycmny.east.verizon.net) left irc: Ping timeout
[08:21] <srikanth> i took the gmat
[08:21] Sachin (Sachin@61471AD4.FC31279F.EE504245.IP) left irc: Ping timeout
[08:21] <Poirot> Are most of you guys from the tri-state area?
[08:22] <Carl> yes
[08:22] <srikanth> am from singapore :)
[08:22] <Carlos> I´m from Mexico :-)
[08:23] <Carl> is anyone here also applying to Polytechnic? it is hard to get information on the program there
[08:23] <Quantnet18> how can u change ur nick name while chatting on this applet
[08:23] <Jocelyn> I'm from Taiwan
[08:23] <Poirot> I was thinking of applying to Baruch and Fordham. But I have heard aweful things about the fordham program.
[08:24] <Quantnet18> that button seems to be disabled change nick to
[08:24] <Poirot> Nice, seems like we have a good representation from around the world.
[08:24] <Carl> all the bad rumors are based off of one students' statement
[08:24] <Quantnet18> I am from India btw
[08:24] <Poirot> yep, disabled for me too
[08:24] <Carl> it's difficult to tell from that
[08:24] <Carl> did you go to the information session at Fordham, Poirot?
[08:24] <Poirot> Carl: true.
[08:24] <srikanth> quantnet18: just type ur nick in the edit box n press 'enter'
[08:25] <Poirot> No dude. Too busy at work.
[08:25] Nick change: Quantnet18 -> AT
[08:25] <Carlos> Quantnet18: you can use IRC commands here, for changing the nick you can use / nick new_nick just putting / and nick together
[08:25] <Poirot> But as far as I know, fordham doesnt have a part time program.
[08:25] <AT> ok i got it actually i was using special chars there which wasn't working
[08:26] <sanket> i think you can use limted IRC commands
[08:26] <Carl> correct, Fordham does not have a part time program
[08:26] <Poirot> Ya, unfortunately Fordham wont fly for me. I wanna continue to work while going to school.
[08:27] <Carl> where do you work?
[08:27] <Poirot> Lehman Brothers, in the ny office.
[08:28] <DinoII> hi, does anyone know if Baruch allows students to waive or at least challenge any courses? I have a lot of C++ programming experience, and also a CFA designation and was thinking if I could substitute with some advanced courses.
[08:28] <sanket> anyone here still an undergrad?
[08:29] <Jocelyn> Poirit:what you heard about the fordham program?
[08:29] <Poirot> Jocelyn: bad things mainly! :)
[08:30] <sanket> dan said the chat might have to be postponted
[08:30] <sanket> *poned
[08:30] <AT> :(
[08:30] <Poirot> but again I dont have a first hand experience with fordham's program.
[08:30] <sanket> he said
[08:30] <sanket> The chat might have to be postponed, if we cannot fix this by 10:30am.
[08:30] <Poirot> oh no ...
[08:30] <Carl> someone posted a solution
[08:30] <Carl> maybe he'll try that
[08:31] <Quantnet43> is it still time to apply for barush?
[08:31] <sanket> you can still apply
[08:31] <Quantnet43> 04thank you
[08:31] <sanket> the deadline isn't till end of april
[08:32] <Poirot> DinoII: I read somewhere in the quantnet forums that you can transfer up to 3 classes. But find out for sure from Dan.
[08:32] <Carl> does anyone know how long it takes to hear from Baruch after your application is complete?
[08:32] <sanket> i was told about a month
[08:32] <AT> ya same question as above
[08:32] <Quantnet43> 04for quick review, could i send paper materials including scans of GRE/TOEFL scores to you?
[08:33] <DinoII> Poirot - it's up to 4 courses - but I don't ahve a university "course" to transfer :(
[08:33] <Jocelyn> so what is the advantage of Baruch compared with Fordham, Poirot?
[08:33] <sanket> i think you have to have an official copy sent to baruch, but you should ask dan to be sure
[08:33] <Carlos> where can I find out if Dan is coming today? I still have to go to the office...
[08:33] <Poirot> DinoII: I see. Ask Dan if you can challenge some of the courses.
[08:33] <sanket> Chat today, Wed 3/5/08 - cannot connect - Quantnet.org - Financial Engineering Forum (http://www.quantnet.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2432)
[08:33] <sanket> check there
[08:33] <DinoII> Anyone here from India? I have a question about immunization records (whatever they might be :))
[08:34] <Sachin> hi Carl..i applied arnd Nov end and came to know abt the interview schedule in 1st week of Jan
[08:34] <Sachin> hi Dino..m from India
[08:34] <AT> me too
[08:34] <Sachin> I spoke to Andy abt it..nd he tole me we cud get it done in India itself or from Baruch when we reach there
[08:34] <Quantnet43> 04i saw a thread of choosing between rutgers and barush, in which it stated that rutgers graduates can also find good jobs had they have connections in NYC, you mean those people already had relavent experiences?
[08:34] <DinoII> When I was born, there was no such thing as a "record"
[08:35] <Sachin> i know..i guess we have to get fresh shots of MMR
[08:35] <DinoII> so, how does one fulfil the immunization requirement?
[08:35] <Poirot> DinoII: How old are you man? Just joking. :)
[08:35] <AT> ya it's a quarter century back
[08:35] <AT> :D
[08:35] <DinoII> Only about a hundred years
[08:36] <Poirot> :)

[08:36] <Poirot> Quantnet43: I did my undergrad from Rutgers.
[08:36] <AT> man then u r goin to increase the average age of Baruch
[08:37] <DinoII> hmmm
[08:37] <sanket> how old is everyone here?
[08:37] <Poirot> And yes Rutgers tech programs have a very reputable name on Wall street.
[08:37] <sanket> im 21

[08:37] <Carl> 25
[08:37] <AT> 24

[08:40] <NataliyaSaldina> does anyone knows, can I waive the GRE?
[08:40] <Carlos> a new date for the chat will be posted on the site, right?
[08:41] <Sachin> "Unfortunately, nothing worked for me. We will have to reschedule the chat for another day."
[08:41] <Sachin> Dan's post on quantnet

[08:41] <bobbychopra> Last I heard was no GRE waives
[08:41] <Sachin> on Quantnet..
[08:41] <Quantnet51> o ok
[08:41] <Poirot> Yep, GRE cannot be waived.
[08:41] <bobbychopra> but you can ask the Admissions office or Prof. Dan
[08:41] <sanket> the chat will most likely be re-scheduled
[08:42] <NataliyaSaldina> how can I ask Prof. Dan?
[08:42] <sanket> looks like the chat is going to re-scheduled
[08:42] <sanket> no date though
[08:42] <Quantnet43> 04hi poirot, thank you for asking my question. i know rutgers' engineering is good...but i got their offer from math finance dept, and i didnt have relavent working experience, and i m international too. gee, i m afraid i cant get a job after graduation and pay back the loan.
[08:42] <sanket> time to go class, by all
[08:42] <sanket> *bye all
[08:43] <Carl> good bye
[08:44] <Poirot> Quantnet43: Based on my personal research, I think Baruch MFE has a better placement record than Rutgers MFE.

Dear Professor Dstefan,

Can I ask a question about financial documentations?

Should I send the Financial Statement and an original bank statement as part of my application materials, or can I send these certifications after I get the admission offer?

Thanks a lot.

Hello,

This is Floris, the owner of the chat network. I've received numerous complaints since the introduction of Vista that people are having problems connecting to the chat network (ours or others) using java applets. However, at this point the java applet is the best solution for a browser gateway.

We have been improving our network to be as open as possible. No signed certificate is needed, no identd running is required, and we have no problem with multiple connections from the same host (as say from work or a school, etc). We also do not block IP or host ranges, meaning that we don't block complete groups of people who use say *.aol.com when we just want a certain person to be banned.

We allow everybody to use any operating system. I test it frequently on each individual chat server using linux / windows / and mac. Using Opera, FireFox, Safari and Internet Explorer.

Java must be installed, and the [trust] button must be clicked to tell the browser you have indeed intentionally decided to load this applet to create a gateway. But besides that it should work instantly.

Unfortunatly. I can not reproduce this issue. Each time it is reported I do a check again using the various computers and operating systems, browsers and try to load too quick, or whatever I can try. But it goes through just fine. Which makes it really hard to debug too on my end.

I am very happy that people are reporting this back to us so we can try and find our socket connection logs and the timestamp and see if we can see the full error.

Would you guys be so kind please to list the following when reporting? The date / time stamp of when you try? The operating system, the browser, and if you have tried it with 1 or multiple browsers. And what the error is that you are getting. Make sure the latest java is installed and make sure you click the trust button from the popup.

I will try to keep an eye on this thread and the emails from Andy.

To avoid this issue in the future our staff is currentliy working on a few alternative meassures that could offer an alternative to the java applet. That said, you could install a real chat client like xchat or mirc (mirc is windows only, xchat works on linux and xchat-aqua works on the mac) and point it to irc.vBulletin-Chat.com on port 6667 (alternative ports for those who have 6667 blocked at school or work: 6669 or 9999). Once connected you can type: /join #quantnet to join the channel. We also have some supporting information using our network on The vBulletin Fans Network - vBulletin Fans Network (http://www.vBulletin-Chat.com/)

Our cenceir apologies for being unable to use the chat smoothly. I wish we knew what the problem with (mostly) Vista is, so we could fix it.

Andy

Floris,
Thanks for the quick response after my email.
What bugs me is that I tried it at school a few hours ago and got the same issues reported by Dan. It was IE6 I believe. I connected it through your site first and still the same thing. The OS is XP as not many people using Vista yet.

When I got home, I have ZERO problem connecting from my laptop (FF, XP).

We have monthly chat with our members worldwide and this is the first time we encountered problems. i hope we can get to the bottom of this ASAP.

I was now able to connect - from my home computer. I am wondering whether this was a problem specific to the school computers.

Hello Professor, I was having some questions about my application, I´m going to apply next year but I would like to prepare it perfectly with enough time so I was wondering if there´s going to be a new chat date soon. In the case that no new date is scheduled, where can I ask you, here directly or by email regarding my questions?

A new chat session will be scheduled soon. I cannot, unfortunately, answer individual questions, due to the high volume of applicants.
